Automotive Network Update for Friday, October 25, 2024

OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE
BNSF continues to see strong volumes moving across our network, with weekly volumes near 200,000 units. Intermodal is especially strong, with year-to-date volumes 16% higher than last year. This week, BNSF engineering teams completed a twelve-mile segment of second mainline track near Augusta, Kansas, on our Emporia Subdivision, which runs from Kansas City to Wellington in Eastern Kansas. This work is part of a multi-year project to add fifty miles of new double-track to our busy Southern Transcon route. This leaves one final three-mile segment, which will be completed before peak intermodal season, supporting greater fluidity, faster service and increased capacity for growth.

Regarding key service metrics, car velocity has decreased from September, but remains relatively steady with last week. While terminal dwell was higher versus both the prior week and last month, it was still 6% lower than October 2023. Local service compliance has improved slightly from last week and month.
 
 

SERVICE EXPECTATIONS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD
Favorable operating conditions are expected across most of our network heading into next week.

As reported, BNSF experienced track washouts in several areas near Roswell, New Mexico this week. The main track is expected to re-open this afternoon but customers with traffic moving through this area should expect lingering delays as traffic normalizes in the coming days. BNSF has issued a temporary embargo and will begin issuing permits early next week as we begin to resume normal operations.
